I had a few thoughts of my own when I read about three-time teacher of the year Megan Mayo pleading with the Guilford County Board of Education not to cut teacher salaries because she’s having trouble paying her power bill on her $48,000 per year salary.
In the interest of being more kindhearted, I kept my thoughts to myself. But a couple of letter writers in today N&R, well, not so much.
Greensboro’s Debbie Hill writes:
Regarding the “dire” circumstances of Megan Mayo, as outlined in the article, “School board hears teacher’s budget plea” (May 28): Give me a break!
This 35-year-old woman cannot manage to live responsibly on $48,330 per year? Poor baby. As a result of personal budget oversights, she has had her electricity cut off, apparently more than once.
Thank God she isn’t teaching economics or money-management skills.
