Here’s a good example of a worthwhile project that’s taking shape without government funding, according to the News & Observer.

This summer, construction will begin on a space for worship, meetings, and private contemplation at Hillsborough’s minimum security prison. Prisoners will build it, and the $235,000 in funding has been raised privately, mostly from the faith community.

This center illustrates a reality we should all be proud of — a reality too many public officials refuse to acknowledge: Society’s needs can, more often than we want to admit, be met without government intervention and taxpayer funding. It takes each one of us stepping forward to do our part as thoughtful members of our community, willing to offer a helping hand to better another person’s life.

Congratulations to all involved.
