U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler, D-NC, had a radio “town hall” meeting yesterday hosted by Matt Mittan in Asheville. Shuler’s performance was less than stellar. Leslee Kulba, the blogger for the John Locke Foundation’s “The Wild West” blog in Asheville was there and has a good rundown of what happened. She also added some of her own comments.

Here’s my favorite Shuler contradiction (Note: these are not direct quotes but paraphrases via Leslee). Here’s Shuler early in the show (emphasis added):

As a businessman, I believe the private sector can usually do a better job than government bureaucracies. Social Security would work if officials didn’t raid the trust fund. Medicare and Medicaid aren’t functioning that badly, either. They just need to be updated.

And here he is later in the show (emphasis added):

Medicare and Medicaid will run out of money in 6-8 years

This is how members of Congress define not “functioning that badly”?
