News of layoffs are everywhere, but today the Associated Press published a feature about how employers who fire their workers are trying to “balance sensitivity with security, compassion with control.”

The whole idea reminded me of the episode of Cheers in which Norm is promoted to be his company?s “executive executioner.” He earns the position because of his ability to express sorrow for the terminated employee — by becoming a blubbering mess as he delivers the bad news. As a result the fired worker goes away feeling worse for Norm than for himself.

What we need are a few more Norms in North Carolina.
