North Carolina scored high marks on FreedomWorks’ latest State Regulatory Openness Scorecard. Our state scored higher than all but five states for a few reasons:

  • The channel of communication between administrative North Carolina state agencies and the concerned public is clear and relatively simple to navigate.
  • North Carolina’s regulations are digitized and published twice each month by the North Carolina Register allowing citizens access to a transparent regulatory landscape.
  • Citizens wishing to comment will find similar processes for most of North Carolina’s state agencies.
  • North Carolina has relatively fewer regulatory restrictions than many other states its size.

North Carolina’s regulatory environment has improved in recent years thanks to legislators’ actions to eliminate some red tape.

Even so, reform is urgent. Regulations slow down the economy and damage businesses, especially small businesses. The John Locke Foundation recommends several ways to repeal these impediments to growth here.
