North Carolinians will finish working to pay their 2010 taxes a few days before they send in their remaining payment for 2009, according to the Tax Foundation’s latest estimate of Tax Freedom Day. Our day comes April 7, 26th latest among all states, and two days earlier than the national average.

When taking into account future taxes to pay this year’s federal deficit, cost of government day moves back to May 21, about the time the state Department of Revenue should be getting tax refunds back to most people. But that date might actually be later, given new estimates of the deficit from the Congressional Budget Office.
