Attention government planners: get your heads out of the clouds and realize that your actions have consequences, many of which you can’t anticipate, so tread lightly.

For example:

Worried landowners clear cut thousands of trees to prevent them from becoming homes for the endangered bird.

The chain saws started in February when the U-S Fish and Wildlife Service put the town on notice that rapid development threatened to squeeze out the woodpecker.

The town is a state-designated bird sanctuary.

Now the agency says it could soon designate entire neighborhoods as protected habitat.

That has prompted landowners to swarm city hall to apply for lot-clearing permits, believing treeless land won’t be protected for woodpeckers.
