The N&R reports Northern Guilford High School assistant football coach Palmer Lee ‘J.R.’ Troutman was arrested Friday for trafficking cocaine.

The article notes Troutman was not a faculty or staff member at Northern Guilford, which won consecutive state titles the last two seasons. Guilford County Schools officials say Troutman’s contract will not be renewed. You’d think so. Still I took note of one parent’s reaction:

“I already heard he’s out on bail. So he may get in touch with the kids. Who knows?” the parent of a Northern football player said. “I think it would be fine. I’m talking about the seniors. These guys are already 18 years old and know good from bad. They know he did wrong. But I don’t think they’ll treat him any differently. … In my mind, he was a good coach, he didn’t sell stuff in the school, and this is his personal problem. Nobody knew.”

I guess the question is whether or not you’d want your 18-year-old son —or daughter, for that matter —- making contact with an alleged coke dealer. If you think “it would be fine,” I guess that’s your biz, but I’m not sure what that says about the state of parenting these days.
