North Carolina’s homeschooling law (like the private school law it was based upon) is unique in keeping non-public education independent of the public school authorities that may be hostile toward parent-directed education. In most states, homeschoolers have to answer to public school superintendents.

However, in South Carolina, it looks like the public schools are going to be answering to a homeschool mom (a seven-year veteran of the state board of education, mind you).
