News & Observer editorial page editor Steve Ford wrote a column of praise for the Kennedy brothers today, ignoring Bobby Kennedy’s connection to Joe McCarthy and downplaying Teddy’s role in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne. He praises the youngest Kennedy thusly (emphasis added):

Nobody knew. Nobody knew that over time, over the long 40 years after RFK’s life was stolen down through today, Ted Kennedy would become not only the “liberal lion” of the Senate, but also one of its most effective members, ready, willing and able to work across party lines in the name of progress.

He meant the Democrat and Republican parties, of course, but he left out another party he crossed lines to work with: the Communist Party.
