The front page of The News & Observer today had a four-column story about how some legislative races have turned downright nasty. A subhead on the story bemoaned that “Democrats and Republicans resort to fears or blatant fear-mongering” in their efforts to win control of the state legislature:

This is rich, coming as it does from a newspaper that has traded in fear mongering since the day the new majority took over on the Wake County School Board last fall, predicting a return to the days of Jim Crow and criticizing the meddling of “outsiders.” It matters not to the N&O or the nativist-sounding Mayor Charles Meeker that this majority was elected specifically because it promised to dismantle the so-called “diversity” student assignment plan in favor of neighborhood schools.
