Yet another fact that, if illuminated before Durham’s municipal elections in November, might have made a difference. Don’t take this as a lament that Thomas Stith did not get elected mayor. Take it more as a lament that our lamentable incumbents got re-elected.
As I pointed out the other day, it has not been a secret, to anyone who lives in Trinity Park anyway, that our water system’s infrastructure has been crumbling. Mayor Bill Bell knew it. All the city council members knew it. But they preferred to spend the money on slacker losers who were just going to waste it or steal it. That’s how Durham’s tax and fee system works. It’s just wealth redistribution to make the world’s really bad people (i.e., the successful, hard-working, employed) pay.
Finally the media have discovered that our water system is crumbling. But it is spun as an aggressive move by city officials to take care of a problem.
“We should be more aggressive in moving to repair our leaks,” Mayor Bill Bell said. “It should be one of our top priorities.”
Should be? Try, should have been! Where were you, your colleagues and the city bureaucrats when the walls were caving in? Congratulations, Durham. You got the government you voted for.
