COVID-19 tends to disproportionately affect those who are above 65 years old and have pre-existing medical conditions. Younger, healthier people tend to be less affected by the disease. This data is critical for our public officials as they weigh reopening the North Carolina, and the U.S. economy.

New data compiled by the Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity (FREOPP) reveals what share of deaths in each state happened to residents of a nursing home or long-term care facilities.

As you can see from the chart above, the majority of several states’ deaths are comprised of those living in congregate living facilities. As of May 22nd, the FREOPP shows that 63 percent of those who died in North Carolina due to COVID-19 were residents of nursing homes or assisted living facilities.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services tracks this metric on its website which you can check out here.
