Do you recall all those commercials trying to convince people they might need food stamps even if they didn’t think they did? A human interest story in the Hendersonville Times-News tells how a lady has gone over three weeks without benefits from her food stamps. Henderson County DSS directors blamed the new computer system. The problem is either statewide or it is not, and it is affecting 300 families in Henderson County. There is no food shortage, there is no lack of compassion for the truly poor. The problem lies somewhere closer to adjusting to the new system, which has the aptonym NCFAST; defeating glitches inputting data into the NCFAST database; or clearing recertification hurdles.
Exactly what’s wrong with the program depends on who you ask.
