I just now finished reading the fed report on the mold problem at Oak Ridge Elementary School that has forced Guilford County Schools to farm students out to three different locations when the school year opens Aug. 25. The N&R put veteran reporter Taft Wireback on the story in yesterday’s Sunday edition.

It’s hard for laypeople to understand why a mold problem wasn’t uncovered as the school was being refurbished. It sounds like the contractor has some questions to answer as well. I realize GCS has opened several brand-new schools in the past few years, but this situation is a prime illustration of the upheaval in the system’s facilities department in the past few years. This incident with Oak Ridge should also serve as a warning as GCS ponders what to do with Craven Elementary, which is a sick building if I’ve ever seen one.
