When I went to the Soviet Union in 1990 I was told to take a bunch of those little Kleenex packs to keep in my camera bag. Why? Because the Soviets couldn’t afford to keep toilet paper in public toilets, and couldn’t keep the rolls from being stolen in the rare case when they managed to supply them.
Those little packets came in handy many times, not just for me, but for the other nine Durham residents who spent nearly two weeks there. It wasn’t just rural public toilets that lacked T.P., either. The public john in the Kremlin Armory had nary a square to spare.
I was reminded of this while reading this story:
Things are getting so bad in Newark that the mayor has ordered the government to stop buying toilet paper.
Obama’s recovery is looking a lot like the Soviet Union in 1990.
