I ignored Ed Williams’ sophomoric Sunday column which pedantically dredged up the Tuskegee syphilis experiments to help ground Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s oft-repeated claim that the U.S. government created AIDS to destroy “people of color.” Just the same played out trope from the smartest, guiltiest white man in Dilworth, I thought to myself.

But now Barack Obama himself is saying Wright went too far with the AIDS claim. It seems the candidate has flipped the bit on Wright. “There are no excuses. They offended me. They rightly offend all Americans and they should be denounced,” Obama told a crowd in Philly today.

Obama — for whatever reason, probably Wright’s widely watched speech at the National Press Club yesterday — denounced Wright’s comments. Williams offered a yes-but explanation of Wright’s “nonsense.”

Keep that gap in mind when considering the Uptown paper of record’s political endorsements.
