Writing for Townhall today, Jon Sanders rips into Barack Obama’s ridiculous speech in which he blathers away about all the various forms of violence that society is said to glorify and encourage — such as rude language by the likes of Don Imus, and the horror of outsourcing in a competitive labor market.

Doesn’t Obama see how insensitive it is for him to link things that are not violent at all with the gruesome mass murder at Virginia Tech? I think he ought to apologize.

He is taking severe criticism from all over the blogosophere. Radley Balko, for instance, blogging at Reason says, “Couldn’t the politicians wait a full 48 hours before propping up the dead for campaign speeches?” Then he hurls (oops– maybe that’s too violent a word) what must the the ultimate insult — that Obama is “bush-league.”

As it happens, yesterday I received a political mailing from Obama08, asking for a contribution to his campaign. Here’s one line: “But challenging as they are, it’s not the magnitude of our problems that concerns people the most. It’s the smallness of our politics.”

Exactly wrong. Our politics are prodigious. Political meddling with our lives is everywhere and “solutions” that entail more coercion from Washington — more things we are ordered to do and peaceful things that we are told we may not do, always on pain of punishment by government officials. What’s small are our politicians, who pander for votes by saying ridiculous things and promising governmental benefits paid for by others.
