Here are two things to look for from Obama’s speech on the Gulf oil spill tomorrow night. First expect him to have a lot of “the buck stops here” kind of rhetoric, giving the appearance of taking responsibility for ongoing problems, while pointing the finger at others. These others will not only include the one time darling of the environmentalist left, BP, but also George Bush and possibly Dick Cheney, probably global warming skeptics, and those in the “drill baby drill” crowd. Also look for for him to try and comouflage the micro issue at hand–i.e. plugging the hole and cleaning up–with what is essentially an unrelated series of macro issues, i.e., comprehensive energy policy and global warming/cap and trade. Remember all crises are ultimately fodder for advancing the greater progressivist agenda, and in this case, drawing attention from the issue at hand.
