The issue of obesity in America often gets “spun” to blame American “greed,” with the usual assortment of folks opposed to free markets denouncing rich, overweight, greedy Americans. But as I’ve pointed out numerous times when the occasion has arisen, it’s the rich who’re more likely to be thin and healthy because they have the disposable income to pursue a healthier lifestyle. USA Today backs up that argument in part, although it focuses on only the expense of dieting. I think USA Today is overlooking the cost of gym membership for people who want to lose weight and live healthier.

As there is a movement afoot to tax high-fat foods, it would be wise to remember exactly who in this country would be most affected by the idea ? the poor. In other words, it’s another “liberal” idea to protect the poor that would wind up harming them and removing more options from them.
