Henderson County is going to fund fireworks again, and well they should. Commissioner Bill O’Connor presented his peers with a serious proposal for cutting fees. The intent is to make Henderson County more affordable for people trying to raise families and stay in business.

The proposed schedule would wipe out such fees as those for home building inspections, which currently cost $1,000 or more for residences of 3,500 square feet or larger; late fees for public-library books; charges for marriage licenses and copies of birth and death certificates; and animal spaying and neutering fees.

The proposal is expected to decrease the county’s revenue by $257,000; so O’Connor asked Manager Steve Wyatt to make up the difference by making permanent cuts in “building inspections, planning/property addressing, recreation, code enforcement, environmental health and water quality.” Wyatt went the extra mile and found another $25,000 in cuts TBA.
