We arrived in Vail, Colo., on Aug. 8, a cold and rainy Friday. We had planned on Saturday, also cold and rainy, to go to Leadville, Colo., about an hour away, to see Lance Armstrong compete in the Leadville 100. But it was cold and wet, so staying in our resort seemed the better thing to do rather than slip around on some hairy mountain roads up to 10,000 feet to get to Leadville.

Too bad. Turns out it may have been an historic race. Lance came in second to a six-time winner of the race. Word is Lance pushed the guy to a record time. Anyway, here’s what I read in the paper this morning:

Citing the slow pace of last year’s Tour and the rush from last month’s Leadville 100 race, Armstrong decided it was time to return.

“This kind of obscure bike race, totally kick-started my engine,” he told Vanity Fair in an exclusive interview, referring to the lung-searing 100-mile mountain bike race through the Colorado Rockies. “I’m going to try and win an eighth Tour de France.”
