Guarino on John Edwards:

Edwards won malpractice lawsuits against obstetricians that resulted in multimillion-dollar awards. The premise behind these lawsuits was that negligence on the part of the obstetrician led the fetus to sustain brain injuries that caused cerebral palsy. The science behind this premise advanced by Edwards and other trial attorneys has been openly questioned in the medical literature…..

The implication is that the fetus posseses absolutley no value or worth if the parents want her to be aborted but has extraordinary worth — indeed, millions — if the parents are victimized by an allegedly botched delivery.

The absudity of this inconsistency is illustrated by one of Edwards’ court cases in the mid-1980s, during which he adopted the voice of the unborn child for dramatic effect. For instance, he told the jurors that the fetus was stating that she was “having problems” and that she later was saying that she “needed out” at a particular stage of the birthing process.

John Edwards is North Carolina’s first serious presidential contender in many years. Many of us regret that his emergence is inevitably a reflection of what the state has become.

:
As it turns out, Ann Coulter was discussing these very same court cases yesterday on Hannity. As you can probably imagine, she was not nearly as polite in her assessment of Edwards:

“I’d rather vote for a pornographer or a drug dealer for president than John Edwards.”
