Gov. Perdue has dispatched computer specialists to investigate the Employment Security Commission’s computer system and why and how there have been major-league problems. The most recent one is the $28 million or so in overpayments to those collecting unemployment. The first was the disclosure, via an audit, that an employee had nothing better to do than to illegally copy computer games and DVDs. Toward the end of the News & Observer’s story is this: (emphasis is mine)

According to the investigative report released in August, the ESC computer analyst who was copying DVDs did so to pass the time while at work. Another IT manager in the department was also implicated in the audit. A forensic investigation of the manager’s computer found a folder containing 533 files that someone had attempted to erase after the state investigation started.

The manager was suspended without pay for 10 days. He remains with the department at a salary of $91,320.

Yes — still employed and making $91,320.
