Once again, I ask how many drug dealers would there be if law enforcement got out of the businesses of conducting stings and building cases. The Smoky Mountain News reports:

Sheriff Robert Holland is looking to ramp-up his department’s crackdown on drug dealers in Macon County, requesting that the county commissioners multiply his allocation for undercover drug buys from $1,000 to $20,000 in its upcoming budget. . . .

By increasing the funds he has available to pursue undercover investigations, Holland hopes to save taxpayer money in the long run. Those savings would come through reducing the need for substance abuse programs, through cutting out the cost of taking a case to trial and by reallocating the man-hours it would otherwise take his deputies to wrap up a case.
