After much wrangling for votes in the state legislature, Durham officials have gotten their wish. The legislature approved a bill to allow Durham to put a 1 percent meals tax on the November ballot.

Heads-up to Durham residents: Officials project that, if passed, the tax would generate $5 million per year, yet the city and county already have put together a $90 million wish list of what they call “unmet” capital needs — things such as a minor league baseball museum.
