Here’s the latest in the saga over land transfer taxes in Chatham County, where commissioners have been some of the most outspoken supporters of the tax in the state. As the story notes, if voters approve a .4 percent transfer tax on the sale of homes and land, the commissioners say they will lower the existing impact fee by $1,000 — from $2,900 to $1,900. However, if the transfer tax isn’t approved, here is what’s in store for Chatham residents (emphasis is mine):

Commissioner Patrick Barnes said the county needs the money now and delaying the referendum would waste time. If it fails, the commissioners can put it on the ballot again in May, he noted.

But, “if it fails, I will move to raise impact fees to $3,500,” Barnes added. “And I will see how high I can raise it.”
