Dear Michael:

Congratulations on becoming the new owner of the Charlotte Checkers! For years the Checkers have been one of Charlotte’s best family entertainment values. Thanks to a great year on the ice by the team and a positive, affordable game experience, the Checkers moved into the Uptown arena and actually increased attendance. I, frankly, doubted that it could be done. But it was.

Unfortunately, it appears the franchise still did not finish in the black for the year. As low ticket prices continue to be one of the Checkers’ great draws — in stark contrast to the building’s other tenant — realistic revenue options are limited. Given your background, however, there might be another path.

Exotic wine and beer nights — tastings if we must — might draw crowds looking to piggyback some exciting spirits on top of their exciting action on the ice. For example, draft Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale might have a few fans in Charlotte. You are the expert, so you see what I mean.

In any event, congrats again, and thanks for your faith in the still great city of Charlotte. We need all the help we can get.

Sincerely,

Your hockey and beer loving friends at the John Locke Foundation.
