The Greensboro News & Record recently ran an excellent editorial

They discussed the recent Superior Court case that held attorneys can’t be forced to pay a mandatory fee to subsidize the judicial campaign finance fund.  The newspaper then makes the case nobody should be forced to support political speech.

No one should be required to contribute
to a political campaign that may represent values and beliefs he abhors
or simply has no interest in supporting.

The legislature has been trying to push political welfare for local politicians.  This would force local residents through such means as property taxes to fund the campaigns of politicians.  Instead of using their hard-earned money to pay for their mortgages, citizens would have to help get politicians elected.

Here’s what the paper said about local taxpayer financing of campaigns:

The public campaign finance debate has moved down to the local level,
with some in Greensboro pushing for a similar system to fund municipal
campaigns….

Not only lawyers will chafe under the collar if they’re forced to pay for campaigns they don’t like. Local taxpayers might, too.
