I was surprised to see this in the bookstore today bearing the “Oprah’s Book Club selection” seal of approval:

Anna Karenina is a masterpiece. I concur with my friend Mike Adams’ description of it as the longest page-turner I’ve ever read. It’s a work that’s both shocking and introspective, examining the nature of man, love, religion, and family, and the intersection and betrayal of all.

I originally was going to write that this selection had elevated my opinion of Oprah and her book club. I balk because of her description of it as “one of the greatest love stories of all time.” It would be perhaps wild optimism to think she refers to that of Levin and Kitty. If she’s referring to Anna and Vronsky, then I fear she is soundly missing the point.
