Orange County commissioners are salivating at the prospect of imposing a higher sales tax rate. They’ve put the quarter-cent sales tax hike on the fall ballot, hoping the second time around will get them what they want. The tax hike failed last November. Now the Herald-Sun reports Commissioner Barry Jacobs is openly discussing the fact that commissioners can’t be held to using the tax revenue on what they tell the public they’ll do with it during the upcoming county “education” campaign. Jacobs doesn’t want the commission to be tied to a spending plan. The other commissioners think they need to give specifics in order to get the tax hike passed.  Despite knowing that Jacobs is correct, the board agreed add to their resolution a chart that tells voters how tax proceeds will be used over 10 years. In other words, they are putting down on paper a commitment they know they don’t have to keep. I’ll bet you’ll be seeing that chart as part of their public “education” campaign.
