Tonight, Orange County commissioners plan to look over a list of things they want the rest of the country to pay for, as they giddily anticipate receiving federal tax dollars. And why are these projects important? According to this News & Observer blog, aptly headlined “What’s in it for you?”:

Staff say these projects would create jobs, stimulate the local economy and create a positive impact regionally.

And I’m sure they’ll help the children, too.

Looking over the list, it is clear that two of the projects are legitimate: updating a sewer system and building a school. However, these should be funded by the county because they are legitimate local “needs.” How will they find the money? By cutting “wants” from the county’s budget in order to fund the “needs.”

So, if this comes to pass, what will be the tax impact on Orange County residents? A blogger calling himself elvisboy77 posted this comment to the N&O blog:

What will be most interesting about this process is whether the BOCC will reduce our taxes by the amount that they get from the Federal Government.

No breath holding over here, folks.

elvisboy77 obviously knows the history of how the county commissioners think and operate.
