That’s just one of the questions some Orange County parents are being asked by school officials when they apply for admittance to Hillsborough Elementary. They’re also being asked to reveal the highest education level of the parents. It’s all part of the mess Orange officials have created in their quest to “balance” economic diversity at the high-performing Hillsborough Elementary and the low-performing Central Elementary. The policy has supporters, but some unhappy parents have formed the group Attention Orange to fight the way the policy is being implemented. From the Durham Herald-Sun:

The required admittance document includes a survey requesting the range of household income and the highest educational level of both parents as part of the board’s overall plan to increase socio-economic diversity at Hillsborough and Central elementary schools.

And the district plans to give priority to students with lower socio-economic status, which will “displace other students whose household income and education meet a higher level,” Attention Orange maintains.
