Orange County voter registration statistics show that of the 104,000 people registered to vote, 53% are Democrats, 19% are Republicans, and 28% are Unaffiliated. There are 95 clear-thinking souls registered as Libertarians.

Despite this spread, the newly constituted Orange County Commission — which has expanded from five to seven members — has zero diversity. All seven are Democrats.

Certainly these folks fought for, and won, their seats. Still, the lack of diversity of thought on this board is a concern, particularly for a local government that prides itself on being inclusive, tolerant, and welcoming to all.

Perhaps former Sen. John Edwards, an Orange County resident, was right after all. There really are two Americas, and the difference can be seen in the views of those who live in Chapel Hill/Carrboro and those who live north of I-40. The one place you won’t see both Americas, however, is on this board.

Will these commissioners represent all of their constituents? Stay tuned.
