I have no problem looking at past inequities of any group, but I am baffled by people who wear blinders about the incredible opportunities that await women today. It’s as if the existence of their movement is more important than acknowledging society has changed and, in some cases, women now hold a distinct advantage over men. Just take a look at the data on North Carolina’s four-year high school graduation rate, in which girls trump boys by 8 points. That reality would, of course, put organizations like the Orange County Commission for Women out of business. Later this month the group will “celebrate” women’s history by showing two films. The first focuses on the oldest and most tired I-am-woman-and-therefore-a-victim complaint in the book. The second is a fascinating account, but the story of inequity that took place more than 60 years ago. The Orange County discussion would have much more relevance today if the group canceled the movies and pondered the level of responsibility today’s women hold for their own destructive choices TODAY. Problems women face in 2007 are largely the result of their own irresponsible decisions. Here’s a fact of life: Inequality occurs every day and happens to every person at one time or another. It is life in a free society. Grow up, ladies, and show some dignity and character. That’s the best thing any woman can do to earn respect.
