Donna, I know you prefer having people opt out of becoming an organ donor to a market-based approach, but given the long waiting list, the harmful effects of black market transactions, and the arbitrary way in which organs are currently matched with recipients, what do you think of this idea of paying for organs put forward by a nephrologist (kidney doctor) in Australia?

The $50,000 payment would be provided in “in-kind rewards financed by the government ? such as a down payment on a house (one of Dr. Carney’s suggestions), a contribution to a retirement fund, or lifetime health insurance”
