Bars must recycle beer bottles and all jails in the state must check immigration status of anyone arrested on DUI or felony charges — just two of the new laws the General Assembly has set to take effect on January 1.
The latter change is more evidence for my theory that the Nick Mackey fiasco is not so much about the immigration checks at the Mecklenburg County jail — a large number of them will continue no matter who is in charge. No, I think this is all about delivering the jail into the hands of Charlotte’s legal community — criminal defense attorneys in particular.
