News is slow today. A trusty source informs me the Giants won. Other than that, the headlines reflect the obvious.

For example, consider “Dropout rates fall in Asheville Buncombe schools.” That just means the high schools are chasing kids with a variety of safety nets. If the kids can’t get to school on time or at all, they can go to early college in the afternoon. If they are bored, they can start taking college classes for credit. If they are high-risk, there is probably a smorgasbord of options. Is it progress to give kids high-school credit for doing non-high-school things?

Another headline informs us “Shuler’s retirement bad news for Blue Dogs.” Since when was a popular incumbent’s retirement not bad for his constituency?

How about “LGBT youths in Asheville gain friends, self-esteem through climbing”? I used to be an excellent climber, but I’m still unemployable.

Perhaps my favorite was “Romney adds to delegate lead after Nevada victory.” That was a remarkable feat, as delegates are normally deducted when candidates win primaries, aren’t they?
