Tom Friedman has a really interesting column today about how Iraq grew its supply of radical Islamist youth who are now giving themselves up as suicide bombers.

He calls them People of Mass Destruction. He theorizes that “we didn’t invade Iraq too soon. We actually invaded 10 years too late.” By his reckoning, the UN sanctions gave Saddam all the time he needed to buffer his regime with religious iconography, and the combination of the sanctions, Saddam’s corruption, and the preaching of religious hatred produced the young men who are attacking our troops today. It’s worth a read.
