From ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas, who formerly covered the Panthers for the Charlotte Observer, during an online chat responding to a question about Dwayne Jarrett:

To be brutally honest, I’m not sure that anyone can truly succeed as a No. 2 WR in that system. Or at least succeed like we would all expect a true No. 2 WR to produce.

Asked to explain, Yasinskas added:

I’ll try to summarize quickly. Moose was good in his first stint. When he left, Jake and coaching staff never had confidence or comfort level with any of the guys they tried to replace him. And you’re right, Jake locked onto the little guy [Steve Smith] WAY too much. But the coaching staff is largely to blame for that. Also, there has to be a certain chemistry among the WRs. Think it was there with the younger Moose and, to a lesser degree, with the older Moose. But not sure anybody else has had much of a chemistry with the guy on the other side.
