As the rest of the NFL that missed the playoffs makes moves — the 49ers just fired their rookie offensive coordinator despite QB injuries — the Panthers show every sign of doing nothing. That does not bode well.

Ever since the Big Cat’s rambling, didactic call for Julius Peppers to “lead” last August, this team has not felt right. Something is hanging over it. Jerry Richardson seems to have some other agenda aside from winning football games — or making money, even.

I further surmise that this thing — whatever it is — is at the heart of Richardson’s refusal to talk to the Uptown paper of record. And it is anyone’s guess if the paper actually knows what this thing might be.

Meanwhile, the Panthers are stuck with one of the worst cap situations in the league — very, very few guys under contract — and no clear way forward. If the no-brainer moves are not made ASAP — waving good-bye to Dan Morgan and David Carr to start — I would be very afraid for this franchise.

Bonus Observation: The Bobcats blew a late lead to the Bulls last nite in front of a half-empty building. Be very afraid for that franchise.
