People across North Carolina learned this week what many parents already knew: most public school systems are not particularly “parent-friendly.” JLF Education Policy Analyst Terry Stoops‘ report on that issue graded all 115 school systems. No system earned an A, while more than 30 systems earned D’s or F’s. The News & Observer publicized Stoops’ report, both as a news story and as subject material for Keung Hui’s education blog. (N.C. Senate Republicans highlighted the N&O story in their daily e-mail of top news stories.) Greensboro’s WFMY and Greenville’s WNCT television also picked up the story, as did The Charlotte Observer. Stoops also spoke to the Richmond County Daily Journal for an article based on his report. Meanwhile, JLF research also played a role in a recent debate about education spending in Pamlico County. County commissioner Christine Mele cited Locke Foundation information in explaining her concerns about the “irresponsible spending that goes on at the state level,” a comment captured in the New Bern Sun Journal.
