According to a letter to the editor in the Mountain Xpress:
The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law issued a national survey in 2006 which revealed that that [sic.] 18 percent of U.S. citizens over the age of 65, 25 percent of African Americans, 15 percent of those making below $35,000 per year and 18 percent of voters aged 18-24 do not have valid photo identification.
It is hard to imagine how these people live. They can’t have a bank account; they can’t cash checks; they can’t drive, fly, or ride a bus. They can’t live in certain Asheville public housing developments that require residents and visitors to present ID to guards. Why, they can’t even experience the joys of asset freezes and declined access persons with valid ID data not entered properly can. Right-wingers are afraid these unidentified people might ride around in votemobiles, same-day registering for early voting. Left-wingers say, “Pish-posh:”
Between 2002 and 2005, only 24 people were convicted of voter fraud.
Personally, I like the barcode that links my name to my votes. It saves the boss man the hassle of peering over everybody’s shoulder.
