The mainstream media tends to lap up the press releases sent out from Raleigh. Meanwhile, poor people, who can’t afford subscriptions to newspapers or internet services, go home to bug-ridden homes without screen windows or air-conditioning. They fall through the floorboards and watch the rain come through the ceiling they can’t patch. Then, they pay higher taxes so huge industries can be on the receiving end of government redistribution. What do local leaders care? They’re creating high-paying jobs.

What is the toll on productive morale when government fosters the James Taggart business model? Wanna turn a profit? Look cute, network, make campaign contributions. Wanna share your neat, new invention with the world? Tough.

Even moguls and tycoons don’t want to be left out of the rake off the poor people – because they can. Doing the Orren Boyle/Wesley Mouch thing transfers money from the productive sector to the unproductive realm of lawyers, accountants, and lobbyists. Not that a million other causes aren’t at work, I just remember the economy being better before this economic development incentives bologna went full-swing.
