The new city council members in Cary are paying back their supporters by stealing property values of landowners. In order to slow or stop growth, the council is considering changes to the town’s Southwest Area Plan.  These changes would drastically cut the number of homes that could be built on buildable land.  One owner of 40 acres noted that the changes would cut the number of homes that could be built on her land from 22 to eight.  Another resident stated that “You have just cut the value of my property by three-fourth by what you are proposing.”

It is all too common in North Carolina that the “haves,” wealthy in a community, have learned legal ways to steal from the “have nots,” land owners who have their life savings in their land. The wealthy get more open space, greenways, parks, etc by stealing from landowners.  And they get an extra bonus that makes them even wealthier because the reduction of buildable land causes their home values to increase.
