Triadwatch alerts us to yet another amphitheater budget amendment from Greensboro Coliseum director Matt Brown, while Dr. Guarino ponders the unimaginable:

The most recent revelations remind us of the support Mr. Brown’s various proposals received from such council members as Robbie Perkins, Zack Matheny and Nancy Vaughan. They are each responsible for much of what has happened.

In any case, we need to create anew the premise that Mr. Brown is accountable for the things that happen on his watch– that he is accountable to the citizens, to the taxpayers. This is not a time for hubris and single-minded empire-building. Instead, it is a time for council members to restore trust with taxpaying citizens. That unfortunately might require council members to publicly ask for his resignation, because nothing else has worked.

The good doctor left Dianne Bellamy-Small off that list of coliseum cheerleaders, while Jim Kee so far has marched in lockstep to make up the trio the Rhino calls the Perkinettes. That’s five solid pro-coliseum votes in place at least until the November election. Until then, Matt Brown will get what Matt Brown wants.

Note in the attachment to the budget amendment the coliseum claims it will “exceed budgeted amount of revenue and expense in FY 2010/2011.” It’s making money, but it’s spending money faster. This is typical government, perpetually running in the red even when revenues are on the upswing.

One more interesting note—- Brown tells the city that private sponsorships have secured funding for the aquatic center scoreboard. Nice, except the city has to front the cash, and the sponsors will pay the city back. I’m not questioning the motives of the sponsors, but, as we’ve seen many times, s**t happens and gov’t ends up eating the bill.
