The Rhino’s John Hammer writes up Tuesday night’s Greensboro City Council porn debate:

Unfortunately for those who are in favor of preventing people from viewing pornography at the library, the issue came down to a battle between Councilmember Robbie Perkins and (fellow council member Danny) Thompson. Perkins has been on the council since 1993, except for a two-year hiatus. Thompson has been on the council nine months. So it wasn’t really a fair fight.

During a break after Neerman’s presentation and before the council discussion, Perkins offered Thompson a deal. Perkins said he could support the recommendation of the staff, which was to block porn sites in the children’s section but allowing the current system to continue on the computers for adults.

Thompson didn’t go for the deal, so Perkins gave him a whole lot of nothing.

I criticized Thompson for appearing unprepared during council debate. But in the interest of being fair and balanced, I’ll note this Inside Scoop report that Thompson has gotten down to work on the issue, heading down to central library “to check how the library’s band-width shaping software actually works for himself.”

As Hammer writes, “(n)o doubt the council will go through the whole discussion in three months when it receives a full report on internet usage at the library.” Hopefully Thompson will be better prepared this time around.
