Advocates for government-sponsored insurance might want to take a look at the struggle parents, teachers and students are enduring when making claims on personal property lost in the fire at Eastern Guilford:

The school system has not reimbursed anyone with state insurance funds and it doesn’t have a timeline for doing so, said Wanda Frazier, the school system’s risk manager.

“Actually there is no progress,” Frazier said.

…The lack of clarity on a reimbursement schedule has frustrated some parents. School officials recommended parents file with their homeowners insurance because they anticipated a shortage of insurance funds. The N.C. Department of Public Instruction will give the district $100,000 to cover all personal property, including clothes, personal teacher supplies and band equipment. The coverage would amount to a reimbursement of about $83 per person if filings covered all 1,200 students and staff.

“We know that there’s not enough money to pay everybody,” Frazier said. “If you have lots of large claims, you could pay 10 people and be out of money.”

So what’s impeding the process? Is it the $1500 claims for bass clainets, or is it the $5 claims for bookbags? I see Frazier’s point that large claims will quickly eat up insurance money. Would it not help matters if the state mirrored the private sector set a deductible for personal property?
