The headline reads, “Planning Board Member Wants to Do away with Public Hearings.” More technically, David Brooks said, “I think the commissioners should have it.” He was addressing the age-old question of how to get people to stop repeating each other when 200-250 show up to speak, as they did at a recent meeting in Jackson County. As it turned out, County Chair Jack Debnam, who sets the commissioners’ agendas, tabled the controversial matter until after the November elections. The topic was revisions to the county’s steep-slope and ridge-top ordinance. The moral is, 200-250 people have too much in the way of interests for one central planner to comprehend.
