We’ve disagreed with UNCC Chancellor Phil Dubois on a light rail line to his campus and over the University’s handling of the Chamber of Commerce-initiated transit study, but Dubois is absolutely right about US News & World Report’s annual college rankings.

It is worthless.

What matters are individual programs at a university. Some may be very strong, others very weak. Prospective students need to put in the work to find out which is which based on their interests and goals in life. Fly-by university-wide rankings — usually involving how much money is spent, not quality — are no substitute.
